Strawberry and hidration

Strawberries are in general and Fresón de Palos in particular, the original fruits of summer season. Although traditionally strawberries only reached the English consumers’ tables for approximately 3 months, nowadays, thanks to Fresón de Palos, things have changed and English consumers can enjoy the best and most nutritious strawberries from May until December,due to the sun and fine weather of Huelva, in Andalusia, south-west of Spain.

When we speak about the moisturizing properties of strawberries, we always start from the same fact, very simple and clear: strawberries are made of mostly water (90%). It’s quite clear that this magnificent fruit is one of the best allies you’ll find to keep cool this hot summer.

We are all aware of the usual tips to follow, often repeated when the hottest days of the summer arrive, as well as the importance of being well hydrated and the necessity to drink between 2 and 3 liters of water per day. But, what happensif you’re not used to drink so much liquid or if in doing so you consume an excess of cold, carbonated, sugary or alcoholic drinks?

This is easy to solve: eat strawberries. They have a great deal of water, are also low in calories and rich in antioxidants.As shown by recent important scientific studies, a daily intake of one pound of strawberries (although it may seem excessive to non-fruit lovers) helps regulate cholesterol levels. Of course, it will allow us to enjoy a proper and abundant daily hydration.

In addition to consuming them raw, strawberries are perfect to flavor ice creams, sorbets or homemade ice pops, optimal to stay hydrated without losing its great flavors.

For health conscious consumers, we suggest youanother equally healthy refreshing alternative: strawberry water. To prepare it, you need, as well as strawberries, stevia leaves as sweetener and some leaves of woodruff. The woodruff or Galiumodoratum, commonly known as Asperulaodorata, is a wild herb with white star-shaped flowers with important therapeutic properties, both gastrointestinal and respiratory. Ahermetically sealed glass bottle is recommended to conserve this curious beverage. Place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 12 hours before drinking. Use 5-6 strawberries per liter of water and the mixture of the two herbs.
